End of the Classroom Student-Life!

Its now a different feeling altogether. My new job has begun; rather my job has begun. After 2 years of a memorable student life at NMIMS, I am back to what most people do throughout their adulthood - do their job, earn money, go through their routines etc etc. I am now a part of all this and plan to be at least for a considerable period of time :) . Its been just a week and there are mixed thoughts. Sometimes, those student days seem already so far away, and sometimes it feels as if , it was just yesterday that I even landed up with the offer to join NMIMS !

Suddenly, the thought dawns on to me. My student life is done and dusted! I am never going to be a student again, never going to sit in the classroom, no more dozing off in those boring lectures, or studying for those namesake exams, no more classroom level ppts, or the googling efforts to make those in the first place. There is nothing of that sort now going to happen unless of course i require to do it in my professional life. Student life is a very unique thing. While in that phase, we normally keep on cribbing about the professors, the home assignments that they give us, the boring lectures that they deliver, the studying that we need to do, the exams that we need to appear for, the academic submissions that we need to make and so on. But interestingly, and I have observed this more from my post-engineering experience rather than post-MBA (Since its been just a few days since MBA was accomplished (?) ), it is these small things itself that give us the fond memories which we keep on reviving time and again. The camaraderie we shared with buddies, those anxious moments when we had to complete an assignment within the stipulated deadline etc. Those deadlines now seem very childish. A moment here and there, a  mark here and there, or a grade above or below, does it really matter any more? What remains behind is the memories and the good time spent together..and then isn't that what is really important? Life is more than the marks, more than simply earning money; developing good bondings and having a good time is more important. This is not to say that we do nothing and just while our time away :D

At the time of convocation, while enjoying the moment of glory, the moment for which I strove and yearned for almost 3 years - right from preparing for the entrance exams and followed by the 2 years of actually doing the MBA -  a simple fact of life crossed across my mind. I am sure most of us will agree with this -

There are certain moments for which u strive so hard, make so many sacrifices, and pray to time to bring them to you all so ever quickly; but when these moments do arrive, you actually want the time to stop then and there !

The Convocation was surely one of these things :)

Beyond what we call 'The Universe' !

We live in the world we know of as the earth. The earth is a part of our solar system which in turn is a part of the milky way galaxy. There are innumerable galaxies in the universe. This is what the average person knows. Or rather what we human begins know of. But what if the galaxies are a part of something even bigger? What if they are just a minuscule of something that forms a part of something else that is even greater and beyond the realms of our current imagination, or rather, scientific capabilities?

We know that we all, or for that matter, everything is composed of smaller components. Matter is composed of maybe molecules, maybe cells depending on what kind of matter it is. Further down are atoms which are further composed of protons, electrons, neutrons and the nucleus. Now just imagine our solar system for instance. If you think of the sun at the centre as the nucleus, and the planets and other bodies going around it as something similar to the electrons, protons etc, then what does that tell us about our solar system? Can our solar system be simply a atom in the larger scheme of things??? Are several such solar systems,  a part of something which we call the milky way actually contributing to be a part of something so big that we never even imagined it to exist?? Look around yourself, there are organisms like us and then there are microorganisms too. Now think from the microorganisms' view. What do they think we are? Or rather, do they even think of us like something like we actually are? Or they believe us to be their milky way? Their solar system? Their Universe??? Are natural phenomenons just the bodily activites of something or someone unimaginable to us? As our bodily processes would be to microorganisms residing in our body??

Humans haven't been able to fathom the breadths and depths of that which we call the Universe. Because what we call the Universe may not in fact be what we think it is ! Perhaps, we are also not what we think we are either !

The Curse of 99 ?

'Will Sachin get his hundredth 100 today?' How many times has this query of hope resonated everywhere around us in the last 6 months? In fact, not 6 months, it seems an eternity since this chant gained momemtum. Fantasies are a strange thing. They flatter to deceive. Of course, that is why they are just 'fantasies'  in the first place. But the fantasy in question is something which is so near to fruition and yet so far. It is a no-brainer whether Sachin will get his 100th hundred or not. Of course he will. When, is where the fantasies begin! And then the death of one fantasy leads to dreaming another fantasy. First it was the World Cup Final. If India's dream-like World Cup victory at Mumbai was not enough to satiate the Indian Masses, Sachins's 100th 100, in the World Cup Final, that too at his home ground, was such a mouth-watering prospect! The ICC Chief Executive Malcolm Speed had even publicly stated that such a scenario would simply be the icing on the cake. But it was not meant to be that way. So what? India, then the Test No. 1 team, was to tour England (then the 2nd best) in a couple of months time and the next fantasy was Sachin getting his hundred at the mecca of cricket - Lords. Even that dream crashed, along with the Indian Team, in England. Since, then, it has become a routine of sorts to dream wildly of the century of centuries, only to be left high and dry. Surprisingly, since then, Indian Team's performance has been downhill and has touched the nadir on the current Australian Tour. It would seem foolhardy or plain ludicrous to associate Tendulkar not reaching the phenomenal milestone to India's dismal performance wherein they  have lost 7 straight Tests away from home. But if analysed carefully, there indeed seems to be some sort of connection in between these 2 happenings.

Sachin's 100th hundred became a topic of national interest and reached a level of mad frenzy as the England tour inched nearer. 'Sachin, the Lord of Cricket, would get it at Lords in the first test match'. The hype and hoopla surrounding this milestone can divert the most focussed of teams, especially if the team has players who themselves have grown up idolising and are ardent fans of this team member. In addition, India was the top test team, and was expected to win their first test series in England. The pressure showed up in the team's performance. Sachin failed to get his century. The team suffered a collapse. Though initially noone possibly could have  attributed this to sachin not getting his hundred, over time, as the prospect of Sachin getting his milestone loomed ahead of the team in every match, the distraction and the frustration of not getting done with the milestone increased further. Sachin, as has been his wont of getting out in the nervous nineties umpteen number of times, kept on getting out at crucial times as and when he reached near his century. Accept it or not, when the best batsman of your team gets out at such a  crucial time (crucial time of the innings too), and that too again and again, it can have an absolutely demoralising effect on the team. And even if that doesn't , the timing of dismissal of Sachin has been extremely crucial. Most of the times, after Sachin has got out in 70s, 80s or 90s in the past 2 couple of series, the Indian batting has invariably lost the plot. Now remember the few series preceding these, where a Sachin hundred would propel the team to huge totals. This was because there were partnerships that blossomed in Sachin's company which took India to that position. However, slowly and steadily, the entire batting unit has lost the plot to say the least.

It is crucial that Sachin gets his 100th hundred out of the way as early as possible. It will break the shackles that seem to have clasped the master batsman. A change in his attitude can do a sea of change to Team India's fortunes and most probably it will. Meanwhile, the curse of 99 continues to torment the Lord of Cricket & his team....Ohh 100th 100, come fast thee.....

The Real 'Test' of Indian Cricket

So what if all my previous posts have been philosophical or psychological kinda posts? I am here to write what I feel about, and what I am strongly feeling about right now is Cricket which has always been my passion. So here is a shift from the normal 'psychic' things (!) to Indian Cricket (and the doldrums it finds itself in, currently on their Australian Tour)

Indian Test Cricket is definitely on the cusp of a major transformation. And no, I am not talking just about the ageing warriors of our ex-Test No. 1 Team. No doubt, Sachin, Dravid and Laxman are ageing and are at the fag ends of their illustrious careers, but it is not just about them . What about the other players who are supposed to be the future load-bearers of the team? What about Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir who are not performning on the current tour? What about MSD's extended loss of form in Test-Cricket. If this picture isnt gory enough, think of the day when the 3 stalwarts decide to hang up their boots? Do we have young guns ready to take on their mantle? We cant think about a certain someone, can we? And that paints an even scarier picture!

It is high time that young guns-in-waiting, namely Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Cheteshwar Pujara etc. are groomed to take on the mantle of the big 3. And this wouldn't be possible just like that in the current scheme of things. A systematic plan needs to be drawn to ensure the same. Another series whitewash is already looming ahead of the team in Australia, and even if fortunately, it doesn't happen and the team manages to salvage some pride at least, the damage has already been done by the first two losses to warrant a deep introspection and planning for the bleak looking future. Even if BCCI looks at it from the point of view of filling its coffers, then a consecutive series whitewash will tarnish the image of Indian Cricket, the audience interest - which has already fizzled out in recent times thanks to excessive cricket - will dwindle further and most importantly for BCCI, the sponsorships would start tumbling too! Forget the current Australian tour for now, but post that lies the time which is invariably the best for laying out a slow and steady transition phase for the Test Team. Looking at the schedule of Indian Cricket in 2012, here is a plan for ensuring a smooth transition of the Indian Test Team.

The Indian Test Team has 3 Test-Series in 2012 post the current Australian Series. They have an away tour in Sri Lanka followed by home tours of New Zealand and England. The fact that India do not have  a major tour such as an away tour of South Africa presents it an opportunity to let have its future players some test Cricket under their belt in home and slightly alien (read SL) conditions. In the Sri Lanka tour, India must make it a point to rest one out of Sachin, Dravid and Laxman in each test and have both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli bat in each test. Although Sri Lanka in home conditions is definitely a challenge, what better opportunity but to try out the future gen in alien yet not-so-alien conditions? Sri Lanka Tour presents the perfect opportunity to try out these 2 players who currently seem to be the best bet to lead the Indian batting in the days to come. Even in the case that the team loses the first match of the tour, the ploy needs to be stuck to firmly if any measure of the abilities of these 2 players is to be drawn. Success of either or both of these players will surely solve at least a part of the batting puzzle (only a part though)

In the Home tour of New Zealand post the away tour of Srilanka, the same ploy of having 2 of the 3 pros and 2 of the young protegees needs to be stuck with. Herein however, 2 more youngsters may be roped in along with the previous two. In one of the test matches in this series, even 2 instead of 1 senior may be rested to try out the rest. But in any case, all the 4 young turks need to be given at least one game to test their mantle.

Of course, other than Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, the selection of youngsters to be tried out in Test Cricket  will be a major decision to be carefully thought out from domestic performances in the ongoing Ranji Trophy and other tournaments coming up. The retirement of the stalwarts also needs to be phased. However that might be a personal call of the players but surely the players should themselves see to it that they do not retire one after the other in quick succession. The selectors need to talk to the concerned players regarding this.

Post the New Zealand home tour comes the England tour, again at home, and it would not be a bad idea to rest all 3 of the pros in maybe one of the games and give a free hand to the youngsters groomed over the previous 2 series.

Such a succession plan will mean that India will have fairly experienced youngsters the next time they have a gruelling away tour in 2013. That tour could could well might be the last time we will see either Sachin, Dravid or Laxman in action, but it will also be the testing point for the youngsters (groomed at home) to perform away from home under the tutelage of the 3 masters.They may not be immediately successful too, but then they arent currently with so many seniors players as well, so that may not hurt as much. Plus, we will at least have some considerably proven players who would definitively learn from the away tour and be ready to tour on their own in the future.

Symmetry & the Zero Principle

So the principle of Zero sometimes seems to suggest that one plus can have a number of minuses to get that all pervasive zero. After all, I never said in my previous blog post that there has to be only one opposite to everything. I never thought about it but even when I did think, I looked around and found the answer to it too in the nature itself. The answer is the principle of symmetry!


While I have talked about symmetry a bit in the previous post as well, I never went into why it essentially explains the 1-plus: 1 minus effect. Herein I attempt to do that in brief..

Have you observed that in nature, everything is symmetrical? Consider the human body for example. Isnt it symmetric? We all know it is. And if by any chance it isn't, we call it a deformation, that is, it is not normal to be out of symmetry. Several authors such Werner Hahn, Steven Weinberg have written books on the principle of symmetry and how it shows up in the various forms in nature and so on. While there is no need for me to go into the details of what these authors have written about, the essential principle is the same. 

So, for every plus, there is one and only one minus, to keep in sync with the principle of symmetry in nature. The result sum will always be zero as we have reiterated a number of times by now. This principle we find in nature can even be extended a lot further. Consider this - Going by the principle, and extending it beyond our world, can there be another earth for our earth? Can there be another solar system like ours? Can there be another galaxy like the milky way is? Lastly, can there be another parallel universe to compliment our universe??? Most probably, there will be, and the principle of symmetry might just be the logical proof to why we earthiens are possibly not the only living creatures in this universe!

The World is a ZERO ! (My Principle of Zero)

Wondered why there is a valley for every mountain? why is there a key for every lock? Why a down for every up? Why is no person perfect? Why does everyone with good habits have bad habits as well? Why are there Gods, and then there are demons too? Why do you love someone , and hate some others? Why there are good people as well as bad people? The reason for this lies in the basic thread that binds anything and everything in this world. It is because this world is made in that way! 

The world is essentially a ZERO, or is rather governed by the Zero principle ! There is a positive for every negative and a negative for every positive. Also every positive has an 'equivalent' negative and vice versa, the only thing being that the equivalence is mostly out of a mere mortal's understanding. The sum total of everything is always a ZERO; it is the basic formula of existence of this world. It is the very reason why the world is in equilibrium and goes on, why the earth keeps on going around the sun and why the moon keeps on going around the earth. It is the basic formula by which the world, or dare i say, the universe stays in equilibrium and is not enveloped by chaos.

Balance is the unwritten rule of the universe. It is reflected everywhere in nature and from the very basic existence of a man for a woman, a bad for a good or why most things in nature are symmetric. The 'symmetricity' principle is another one that vouches for the ZERO principle. The nature's way is that of balance. It has in it lessons for leading our life too.The one who will lead  a balanced life, neither too less nor too more of anything will be the winner in life. Anything in excess is poisonous. So is too little of anything. Its should not have been too difficult to live such a life given that that is the way nature behaves and we have all evolved from it as well. But it is man's insatiable ambition that leads him further away from nature and balanced life. Unbalanced life structure is in fact the basic reason for most diseases and problems that people face in today's world. 

There are plenty of laws and scientific theories that in fact have the ZERO theory at their core. One of them is the famous Newtons third law of motion which, as we all know, states that "Every action has an equal and opposite reaction". Coming to think of it after understanding the ZERO principal, it seems even more logical and obvious. If every action is a plus, then its reaction is a minus! The law of gravity too is a manifestation of the principle of zero. Another one it the 'Law of conservation of Energy'. Energy can neither be created nor destroyed and only changes its form. A positive energy is compensated with a negative one. When one kind of energy disappears, there would be left a void, a minus which is against the core foundation of the universe and hence that energy must transform and be present in some other form, a plus which will compensate that minus and the sum total would again be a ZERO !

The principle of ZERO has to be the most basic of theories of existence of the universe. It can be applied to the simplest of things in and around our life. It can applied in a scientific as well as a psychological study. Look around you and you will find it everywhere..The world is indeed a zero !

In The Zone

So I have named this blog "Think Zone"..Why? Very frankly speaking, it had got nothing to do with anything strategic on my part to be naming it so. No, I have not thought anything like this blog will feature only things one might think of in his or her fantasy or so on. I had initially thought of naming this blog 'In The Zone'. This definitely had its reason though. I have always been fond of writing, in fact since my childhood, I have been writing short stories, a couple of which were even accepted for publishing in a children's magazine. I usually feel like writing only when I am in a particular zone of my own. It is a mind zone, not a physical one. When in that zone, ideas, topics and words come easily, in fact they flow from my fingertips (not the pen's tip any more!). All the writers here would agree with me that such a zone does exist, when your mind and your fingertips are so much in sync that you just continue to type and suddenly realize that you have typed a whole lot. I had though of dedicating my blog title to that zone which is really the chief source of inspiration for me creating the blog in the first place. But since the name was not available, I had to come out with a name, and since one of my first ideas about what to write here was something abstract, something that will trigger a though process,  I decided about naming this blog as the "Think Zone". And since I couldn't dedicate the blog name to my inspiration-source, I thought of giving up my first blog-post topic and writing this piece instead. And so this piece is titled 'In the Zone' ! 


Thought of first up clarifying lest anyone stumbling on the block build up huge perceptions about the blog ! However, all your perceptions may not be wrong too. Because this blog will surely contain some imaginative / thought-provoking stuff.. !
